Root Canal Treatment

Endodontic treatment - Root Canal Treatment in Middlesex

What is root canal treatment?

Inside your tooth is the pulp, often referred to as the nerve of your tooth. It contains blood vessels and nerve endings that keep the tooth alive. Endodontic treatment is required when the pulp has become infected as a result of previous dental treatment, decay or trauma.

When the pulp of a tooth dies as a result of infection, a number of symptoms can arise, such as sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling on the gum, pain on biting or severe toothache. Sometimes there may be no discomfort at all.

Once the infected material has been removed by the endodontist, the inside of the tooth, which is called the root canal, is cleaned and then sealed to prevent reinfection. An aesthetic restoration, such as a crown, is then placed some time after the treatment is completed.

Will it be painful?

No. For your comfort, local anaesthetic is used throughout the procedure. Should you experience any slight discomfort after treatment, a simple headache type of painkiller will usually be sufficient. We use the very latest technology, including surgical microscopes, and it is not unusual for patients to be so relaxed in the chair that occasionally they fall asleep!

How long will it take?

The longest time you will be in the surgery is for one and a half hours. Sometimes treatment can be completed in one visit, but usually two visits are required. This is dependent on the condition of the tooth and the complexity of the case.
